How to Order a Custom Handmade Pet Urn – And What to Expect Along the Way
When the time comes to honor a beloved companion, the idea of ordering something “custom” can feel overwhelming. You’re already navigating grief. The last thing you need is a complicated process or confusing instructions.
But here’s the truth: ordering a custom urn isn’t about adding more to your plate. It’s about creating something beautiful out of the love you’ve carried for years. And the process—while thoughtful—is simpler than you might think.
At Paw & Clay, we’ve guided hundreds of families through this journey. Each time, we’re reminded that what families really want is clarity, kindness, and a result that feels true to their pet. This guide walks you through every step, from choosing the right size to holding the finished urn in your hands.
Step One: Choosing the Right Size
Before anything else, you’ll want to select the urn size that best fits your pet. This is based on their weight—not their breed or height.
If you’re unsure which size is right, don’t worry. You can always reach out to us with your pet’s weight and breed, and we’ll help you choose. We’d rather you ask than guess.
Step Two: Submitting a Photo
This is perhaps the most meaningful part of the process. The photo you choose will become the hand-painted portrait on your pet’s urn.
For the best result, we recommend uploading clear photos that show your pet’s key features from multiple angles. A few tips:
-
Choose photos with good, natural lighting
-
Include at least one front-facing view of their face
-
If possible, add a side view or a photo showing their body shape
-
Capture the little details you loved most—the way their ears tilted, the curve of their tail, the expression they wore when they were truly at ease
You’ll find the photo upload button right above the “Add to Cart” button on our product page. Don’t overthink it. We’ve worked with blurry snapshots, phone photos, and old Polaroids. We’ll work with whatever you have.
Step Three: Placing Your Order
Once you’ve selected the size and uploaded your photo, you’ll complete your order just like any other online purchase. You’ll also have the option to include a handwritten inscription on the urn—typically a name, dates, or a short phrase that mattered to your family.
After checkout, you’ll receive a confirmation email. And then the quiet part of the journey begins.
Step Four: The Draft Preview
Within 5–7 business days of receiving your order and photos, our artists will create a digital draft of the portrait. We’ll email it to you for approval.
This is your chance to see how we’re interpreting your pet’s likeness. Does the expression feel right? Are the colors close enough? Is there something small you’d like adjusted?
We include one complimentary round of minor revisions. If you need more than that, additional revisions are free of charge—they just add a bit more time (typically up to 7 days). We want you to feel at peace with the portrait before we move forward.
Step Five: Drying, Firing, and the Wait
Once you’ve approved the draft, the urn enters a mandatory 7-day natural drying period. This isn’t us being slow—it’s the clay telling us when it’s ready. Rushing this step would compromise the quality, and we refuse to do that.
After drying, the urn is glazed and fired at 1250°C. That intense heat transforms the underglaze painting into something permanent. The colors won’t fade. The portrait won’t wear. It’s sealed beneath a crystal-clear glaze, food-safe and durable for a lifetime.
For orders without revisions, the entire process—from order to shipment—typically takes about 14 days.
What You’ll Receive
When your urn arrives, it won’t look or feel like a mass-produced product. It will have weight. Substance. A smooth glaze that catches the light. A portrait that—while not an exact photograph—captures something truer: the spirit of your companion.
Every urn is 100% handmade. That means you may notice very minor variations in weight, dimensions, or glaze texture. We don’t see these as flaws. We see them as the signature of true artistry—proof that human hands, not machines, created this tribute.
Your urn will arrive in multi-layered, anti-shock packaging, designed to protect it during shipping. If you’ve chosen the optional elegant black memorial box, that will be included as well.
What the Portrait Will Look Like
We want to be honest with you: exact photographic replication is not what we promise. A photograph freezes a moment. A hand-painted portrait interprets a life.
Our artists study your photo—the shape of the eyes, the set of the ears, the way your pet held their head. Then they paint, brushstroke by brushstroke, trying to capture not just the look, but the feeling. The result is unique. Imperfect in the way all handmade things are imperfect. And deeply, unmistakably theirs.
If you’re looking for something that looks exactly like a printed photo, this may not be the right fit for you. But if you’re looking for something that feels like your pet—something made with intention, care, and reverence—you’ve come to the right place.
A Gentle Reminder
Grief doesn’t move in a straight line. Neither does creating something by hand.
There may be moments when the waiting feels long. When you wish the urn could arrive faster. When you wonder if the portrait will truly capture them.
We understand. We’ve been there ourselves—which is why we started Paw & Clay in the first place.
What we ask is that you trust the process. Trust that we are working slowly because we care deeply. And trust that when the urn finally arrives, you’ll hold something that no factory could ever produce: a vessel made not just of clay, but of love.
You’re Not Alone in This
Throughout the process, we’re here. If you have questions about sizing, about the portrait, about shipping timelines—just send us a message. We’re a small team, and we answer personally.
Ordering a custom urn is an act of love. It’s saying, your life mattered. Your memory deserves something beautiful. And we are honored to help you create that.
